Scary Movie 6 Review: Nostalgia Couldn't Save This One

There is one phrase that best describes my experience with Scary Movie 6: Lots of Let Downs. As someone who grew up watching this franchise, I walked into the theater expecting outrageous parody, unforgettable scenes, and the kind of comedy that leaves people quoting lines for years. What I got instead was a movie that occasionally found its footing but spent far too much time tripping over itself.

The franchise has always been known for pushing boundaries. Whether it was horror movies, celebrity culture, or social trends, Scary Movie built its reputation by making fun of everything. That fearless approach is exactly why so many fans were excited to see the series return.

To the movie's credit, there were moments where the comedy landed. Some of the funniest scenes came when the film poked fun at the hypocrisy found throughout modern politics. Regardless of where someone stands politically, the movie occasionally reminded audiences that both sides often say one thing and do another. Those moments generated some of the strongest laughs in the theater.

The problem is that those bright spots were scattered throughout a film that struggled to maintain momentum. Several jokes went on far longer than they should have. Instead of hitting hard and moving on, the movie often stretched punchlines beyond their natural lifespan, turning what could have been funny moments into awkward ones.

The first twenty-five minutes felt stronger than the rest of the film. However, looking back, much of that enjoyment came from nostalgia. Seeing familiar faces and recognizable personalities instantly brought back memories of previous entries. The franchise was earning goodwill based on its history before it had truly earned it through new material.

Using the Stewart's Passion Smoke Signal Scorecard™, I awarded the film 2.5 out of 15 points for Plot. The story often felt secondary to the jokes, and unfortunately many of those jokes weren't strong enough to carry the weight. The narrative lacked direction and never built toward a truly satisfying payoff.

For Staying True to Characters, the movie scored 10 out of 15 points. The returning characters still felt like themselves. They were inappropriate, ridiculous, and unapologetically over-the-top. Fans looking for the classic personalities will find some comfort here.

The movie received 6 out of 15 points for Keeping It Current. While it attempted to tackle modern topics and trends, many of the references felt surface-level. The political hypocrisy jokes were among the few current topics that actually delivered consistent laughs.

For Relatability, the score landed at 2 out of 15 points. Some of the humor felt disconnected from everyday experiences, making it harder for audiences to connect with the material. Instead of clever observations, several jokes simply felt weird for the sake of being weird.

The category of Theater Appeal and Audience Draw earned just 1 out of 15 points. There were roughly twelve people in our showing, and our group accounted for three of those tickets. For a franchise with the history of Scary Movie, that level of attendance was surprising and disappointing.

Then there were the expectations. I kept waiting for the movie to deliver a modern equivalent of its legendary parody scenes. I expected a standout sequence that would become the talk of social media. I expected the new basketball scene everyone would be discussing. Instead, those moments never arrived. Even the hype surrounding the rumored bong-themed popcorn bucket ended up feeling like another missed opportunity attached to the overall experience.

That disappointment is exactly why the Stewart's Passion Smoke & Mirrors Penalty™ exists. This category measures whether the trailer and marketing were better than the actual movie. Scary Movie 6 receives a -8 out of 15 penalty because the promotional material sold a stronger experience than what audiences ultimately received. The movie's base score was 21.5 out of 75 points, but after applying the penalty, the final score drops to 13.5 out of 75. That earns Scary Movie 6 a Moldy Brick (F) rating. There were laughs here and there, especially when the film exposed the absurdity and hypocrisy found in politics, but those moments weren't enough to overcome the dragged-out jokes, lack of memorable scenes, and overall feeling that this franchise is still chasing the magic of its earlier entries.

Once the Bong Popcorn bowl was fake hype I knew the rest would follow suit. This movie was a disappointment to anyone that came up on this franchise. Very honest review Stewart’s Passion. Agreed!!

Texas Gal.Here: I’d say the movie deserves at least a C- yes. I laughed out loud a few times, though I’ll have to say- 6 was the worst of all the franchise, including the Scary Movies Wayne’s had no part in. 6 was indeed the saddest.

Me and the gf went, she thought is was wack and I wasn’t even sure why I stayed the whole movie. Withing 45 mins I literally tuned out I felt embarrassed for the creators of the movie. Expected more from the Wayne brothers
