No seriously: We are about to get deep into this garden. We are stepping into the Chef's kitchen so take notes and get a virtual wiff of the run down with the Chef!!!
It starts with sending cultivars off for paid testing with trusted partners to see just what is truly behind the cultivar. This ensure true genealogy for the cannabis variety. You got definite genetics - it's off to the races. The Chef prefers pheno hunting- at times things got a bit hectic and the curse of hermie's came & went. You live you learn. Some advice from the Chef- DON'T GET TOO ATTACHED TO A PHENO HUNT! If you need more info on what pheno hunting is check out our blog on BREEDER STEVE where we discuss the fact that THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS STRAINS!!!
The Chef has a mighty check list to go down on the daily check ins of the plants but I'll let The Chef Tell it-
"So as far as the garden, I enjoy pheno hunting the more I can go through a strain the more dialed in I can get it. Everything is about finding the correct pheno. So it starts early, in my garden I document daily checking temps, air quality, airflow, color, structure, vigor, and of course getting a nice stem rub even in Veg to see the smell and oils produced by the plant early on. I run coco and typically run 1 Gallon pots with a Netafim drip system, but also have a splitter so that I can feed by hand if I choose. I typically feed by hand everyone morning while observing for the traits of the plant itself. I also have grow link monitors in the coco to have an idea what my dry backs are and typically feed in short intervals until at capacity for P1, P2 I give a longer shot calculated by 15% run off and my P3 is my dry back period. I run 5.8 PH through Veg, and 6.2 during flowering, through Veg I only prune to open up the plant to the light, I quickly pick the PPFD up so that by the time I flower The plants are getting 600 PPFD, Every monitor and every sensor is connected to my phone so that I can make adjustments anytime, including monitors in my reservoirs to tell me how much water is left. I grow in a 2,100Sq ft facility that I ran the irrigation, layout, and some of the electricals. I also have pheno hunts that I like to do in a 10X10 Gorilla Grow tent because it’s easier for me to make changes to keep them separate and provides a more forgiving space to learn in."Â
Those looking to breed their own strains at home should be ready to invest in multiple tents. Ensure you have a well controlled environment and be sure to keep the tents clean and separate from each other, last thing you'd need is air quality tarbished by clouds of pollen floating around. What would you do to make the most out money soent- you let mother nature do what she does best!
Here is what Chef recommended for quality home setup results-
"The easiest way for a home grower to breed is to utilize grow tents to isolate the plants. The best and most accurate way is to have male and female genetically speaking but once finding the correct phenos the S1 process should be used to get the most of the pheno obviously keeping the original starters. Also ensuring pollen does not creep out of your controlled environment utilizing paint brushes and bagging off the node once brushing it with pollen to contain."
Do you know what S1 IS?
ANSWER-
When you cross a prized pheno back to itself utilizing the hermaphrodite process.
All in all the Chef makes his mark in the world of Pheno Hunting. The passion is capture all over their Social Club Profile.
Great vibes from their garden with a dedication down to the number of strains/cultivars they produce depending on market needs.Â
It was a pleasure getting a deeper dive behind the tricomb shots and beautiful colors I seen on their profile!! Hope you enjoyed reading this one be sure to comment below for any questions, hope we can all grow and learn together, & develope some bomb ass cultivars in the future.
How would you know what you grow is going to "WOW THE BUYER"? "We have a team tradition after every harvest we sit down as a team and smoke a Vibes Cubano once we dry and cure the yield to recognize and celebrate the teams drive to excellence! And to have an honest QC session to ensure we are only bringing the most premium product to the market." - The ChefÂ
