Cannabis Could Have an Unexpected Ally: The Bees
Cannabis has been discussed as medicine, agriculture, fiber, food and even biofuel, but researchers have uncovered another interesting role for the plant: a food source for bees. A viral Instagram post claims that bees are “flocking to cannabis farms” and that scientists believe cannabis could help save struggling bee populations. There is legitimate science behind the first half of that statement. The “save the bees” part, however, needs considerably more context.
One of the most interesting studies came from researchers examining industrial hemp fields in northern Colorado. Researchers collected 1,937 bees representing 23 different genera from flowering hemp fields. European honeybees accounted for about 38% of the bees collected, while other native bee groups made up much of the remaining population. The findings demonstrated that hemp fields can attract an unexpectedly diverse collection of bees.
There's something unusual about this relationship: cannabis doesn't need bees to pollinate it. Hemp is primarily wind-pollinated. Male cannabis plants release enormous quantities of pollen into the air, allowing the wind to carry that genetic material to female plants. Hemp flowers also don't provide the floral nectar bees normally seek. Instead, bees appear to be visiting male hemp plants primarily for their abundant pollen.
That pollen can be valuable because pollen supplies bees with nutrients including protein and fats. Timing may make hemp particularly interesting. In northern Colorado, researchers noted that hemp can flower from late July through September, a period when fewer pollinator-friendly crops may be flowering. Cornell researchers studying New York hemp farms reached a similar conclusion: hemp flowers late enough in the summer that its pollen could become an additional food source when other agricultural flowers are limited.
Cornell researchers took the investigation further by repeatedly collecting bees visiting hemp flowers on farms across New York. Their published study identified 16 different bee species utilizing hemp. They also discovered something fascinating: taller hemp varieties were associated with greater bee abundance and species richness. Researchers concluded that hemp's unusual flowering period gives the crop the potential to provide an important nutritional resource during periods of floral scarcity.
More recent research strengthens the case while also providing an important warning against exaggerating it. A study examining pollen from four industrial hemp varieties recorded 1,826 pollinators, primarily sweat bees and bumblebees. Researchers found that hemp pollen provides nutritional benefits, but they specifically cautioned that its nutritional quality may not be adequate as an exclusive pollen source for bee growth and development. Bees still need a diverse diet from multiple plant species.
That's why saying cannabis could simply “save the bees” goes beyond the evidence. Bee declines are connected to multiple pressures, including diminishing forage resources, pesticide exposure, habitat changes and climate-related stresses. Planting enormous cannabis fields isn't a magic solution. What the research suggests is that pollen-producing hemp could become one piece of a larger pollinator-support strategy, particularly in agricultural landscapes where flowering resources become scarce during late summer.
There's also an important lesson here for cannabis and hemp farmers. If bees are actively feeding in hemp fields, pesticide practices matter. Researchers have specifically warned that as hemp acreage expands and growers encounter more insect pests, pest-management programs should account for the beneficial bees visiting those same plants. A crop providing food for pollinators doesn't help much if management practices expose those pollinators to unnecessary hazards.
Bees are much bigger than this cannabis story. They are essential pollinators that help flowering plants reproduce and support the food systems and ecosystems that humans and wildlife depend on. Protecting healthy bee populations means protecting biodiversity and the plants that ultimately put food on our tables.
